By making just small changes in the way we do things, we can help to reduce the risk of pain and discomfort.
Around the house
When doing chores, decorating or gardening, use the right equipment and avoid stretching or reaching too far. When picking something up, don’t bend your back; instead, try to bend your knees and keep your back as straight as possible. Take plenty of breaks.
Out and about
In the car, make sure your seat is properly adjusted and that you sit up straight. At the shops, try to distribute your shopping evenly in both hands.
At work
If sitting down, try to sit upright and use a chair that supports your lower back. Avoid making the same movements over prolonged periods of time.
Exercise
Muscles and skeleton benefit from regular exercise to keep them strong and healthy. But don’t over do it! Whatever activity you choose, build up gradually to a level that suits you. If you have a bad back or any ongoing condition, check with your doctor that your exercise regime is appropriate for you.
